RDAA Engaged the Governor of Western Equatoria State and Yambio Residents in Town Cleaning for Peace and Reconciliation.

On 23rd January 2021 RDAA invited Lt. Gen Alfred Futuyo, The Governor of Western Equatoria to preside over the cleaning of Yambio town. Among the participants were, the Armed forces, wild life, police, fire brigade, WFP staff, Red Cross staff, the traders, Yambio County leaders, RDAA staff and Yambio town residents. The general clean-up was conducted in the morning while the football match climaxed the day in the evening with calls on Yambio county citizens to embrace peace. The two activities are components of RDAA project titled ‘advocacy on inclusive dialogue, reconciliation, healing and social cohesion’ funded by UNDP.

The challenge of solid waste management in Yambio town is lack of a dumping site. The desire to keep Yambio town clean rank high on Governor futuyo’s plans to make Yambio the cleanest town in South Sudan. The town is a gateway to Tombura, Nzara, Ezo and the larger Western Equatoria region hence the need to ensure that it is environmentally friendly.

The Governor invited local stakeholders to unite with the County Government to make the environment clean in order to attract both local and foreign investors. He promised to pick up from RDAA’s initiative and to set up an enforcement team to ensure proper waste disposal and urged residents and traders to be responsible for the waste they generate. Anyone dumping his or her waste in the open will face prosecution, warned the Governor.

The Governor further said that his government is committed to providing proper solid

waste management to ensure that all residents and traders dwell and transact in clean and safe environment. He said that his government is always listening to the needs of residents and market traders and that the county has streamlined operations on garbage collection and will invest in equipment for solid waste management.

Speaking in Both fluent Arabic and Zande language, the Governor issued an executive ordered for a temporary closure of the main market for a period of 3 days for massive cleaning of the town and declared every Saturday as a clean-up day. He urged all business people to take up town cleaning seriously and to start a mandatory door-to-door garbage collection every Saturday.

The Governor further said that his government is committed to providing proper solid

The governor further demanded that the town residents should ensure that polythene papers and light plastic containers are properly disposed and that all shops, restaurants and bars owners should ensure that; at least two rubbish tanks are availed at their places of work for the collection of rubbish.

The governor appreciated the response shown by all who participated particularly the traders and Yambio town residents, He urge them to be patient as he worked towards organizing the town to be the commercial hub for the region.

Finally he thanked RDAA for organizing such events for the promotion of peace in the region, he also thanked them for suppling the equipment used in the exercise such as the Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs), wheelbarrows, rakes and spades for the cleaning of the town. Approximately 1o- 15 tonnes of solid waste was cleared from the Central Business Area of Yambio.
